Dorthy Rue VanHorn

Dorothy Rue Van Horn of Rolla, formerly of Bland, died Wednesday, November 30, 2011, in the Rolla Manor Care Center. She was 88. She was born on September 11, 1923, near what is now Rend Lake in southern Illinois and is the only child of the late William Aden and Rue Tuthill Mallory. Within a few days after Dorothy's birth, her mother died of complications from childbirth. Her father, who travelled, entrusted her to his sister, Violet Quillman, to raise. To Dorothy she was "Mom".
Dorothy graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. On November 23, 1945, she was married to Lewis Van Horn. In 1954, the young family moved to a farm south of Bland. She spent part of the next three decades teaching elementary school in Bland and Belle. In 1994, she moved to Rolla to be close to her family.
Surviving Dorothy is her son Bill with his wife Lois of Rolla, and their daughter Angela Price with her husband, Vernon Price, and their children William, Bronwyn and Mason of Hendersonville, Tennessee.
Preceding Dorothy in death is her husband Lewis.
