Herbert "Herb" James Detjen

Herbert “Herb” J. Detjen, age 81, of Bland passed away on Thursday, September 14, 2023 at his residence near Bland.

He was born on October 26, 1941 in Alton, Illinois, a son to the late John James and Gladys Rose (Huber) Detjen.

Her attended the St. Joseph in Manchester and the Maplewood Richmond Heights High School. On February 3, 1960, at the age of 18, Herb joined the Army and proudly served his country.

He was united in marriage to Yolanda Ester Rigo in Panama. She preceded him in death in May of 1977.

Herb worked sheet metal at McDonnell Douglas in St. Louis for many years.

Herb moved to the Bland area in 2008. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and being outdoors. Herb liked to watch westerns on tv as well as church services such as Shepards Chapel. He was a dog lover and had many through the years that he adored. Herb was kind hearted and very generous and he loved the time spent with his children, grandchildren, and family. Herb will be missed greatly by those that knew and loved him.

Herb is survived by: one son, Herbert J. Detjen and his wife Mary of St. Charles; two daughters, Gladys Buyan and her husband Tim of Wentzville and Susan Schultehenrich of St. Charles; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one brother, Kenny Detjen and his wife Judy of Bland as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.

In addition to his parents and spouse, he was preceded in death by one brother, John Detjen and an infant granddaughter, Samantha Schulthenrich.

A celebration of life will be held on Friday, September 22, 2023 at Sassmann’s Chapel in Bland from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. with military honors and a small service at 4:00 p.m.
