Roy R. Shanks , 89, of Belle, died Saturday, June 9, 2012, after a brief illness. Roy was born on June 2, 1923, in Maries County. He is the son of the late Oscar and Elizabeth Hafner Shanks. On June 2, 1950, Roy was married to Wilma Giesler and to this union three daughters were born.
Surviving Roy are three daughters Robin Shanks of Jefferson City, Renee Zeilman with her husband Kenny of Rich Fountain, and Raychell Shanks of Springfield. Also surviving is one sister Helen Satterfield with her husband Allen, sisters in law Lucille Vincent, June Moore, Dale Harvey, and brothers in law Edward Giesler with his wife Catherine and Lowell Fryer. There are two grand daughters Brooke and Erin Zeilman, many nieces and nephews.
Roy is preceded in death by his wife Wilma, a brother Lawrence, and a sister Dorothy Heck Smith.
Roy was a veteran of WWII, a member of the Lutheran Church in Belle, and well known as the Master Gardner of Belle. Roy worked for 32 years for International Shoe Company in Belle. He retired at the age of 74 after working another 16 years with Kingsford charcoal.
Services for Roy will be held on Tuesday morning at 10:00 AM from the Lutheran Church. Interment will be in the Liberty Cemetery.
A visitation for Roy will begin on Monday evening at 4:00 until 8:00 at the Sassmann's Chapel in Belle.
