Samuel Ray “Sonny” Spurgeon, age 94, of Belle passed away Monday, May 30, 2022, at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Jefferson City.
He was born July 11, 1927, in St. James, a son to the late Samuel Ray and Jewel (Terrill) Spurgeon.
On July 2, 1955, he was united in marriage to Nora June Meurer at the preacher’s house in Bland. Nora preceded him in death on August 1, 2019. In addition to his wife of 64 years, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Vanessa June Spurgeon and two sisters, Melba (Spurgeon) Koenig and Hazel (Spurgeon) Ballman.
Sonny was a 1945 graduate of St. James High School and following school, proudly served his country in the United States Army. Sonny served a year in Germany and then returned home to do what he loved. Working the land. He and his father worked together and Sonny continued to work until recently when his health got bad.
Sonny was a longtime member of Highgate Baptist church and was baptized there on May 9, 1954. He was an active member of the Belle V.F.W. and of the Belle Masonic Lodge #373 where he served as master in 1984.
Sonny liked to stay active and enjoyed going to the senior center in Owensville to play Pinocle on Wednesdays and Fridays and would play Wahoo every Saturday with his family and friends. He liked watching St. Louis Cardinal baseball and Wheel of Fortune which he seldom missed. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Sonny loved his family very much and will be missed greatly by them and anyone who knew and loved him.
Sonny is survived by: one son, Dennis Spurgeon and his wife Donna; two grandchildren, Dustin Spurgeon and his wife Dani and Dean Spurgeon; five great-grandchildren, Isaiah, Michael, Gabriel, Kiara Beck, and Sadie Jo and one brother-in-law, Frank Meurer as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
Visitation for Sonny will be on Friday, June 3, 2022, at Sassmann’s Chapel in Belle from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
Funeral Services will be on Saturday, June 4, 2022, at the Highgate Baptist Church beginning at 11:00 a.m. with Doug Williams officiating. Interment will follow in the Highgate Cemetery.
Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Highgate Baptist Church.
