Walter Eugene Nie

Walter E. Nie, age 90, of Belle, passed away Friday, June 23, 2023, at the St. James Veteran’s Home.

Walter was born May 7, 1933, in Maries County, a son to the late Walter Joseph and Talytha Pauline (Woemmel) Nie.

Walter was a lifelong area resident and a 1951 graduate of Belle High School. Following high school, Walter proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War.

On June 3, 1956 he was united in marriage to Dorothy Hammack at the Koenig Methodist Church. Dorothy preceded him in death on June 7, 2019.

In addition to working on the family farm all his life, Walter had been employed at the International Shoe factory for 19 years and at the Belle post office for 25 years. Walter loved farm life and continued to work the farm and raise cattle until 2020.

Walter like to hunt and fish and took several trips to Canada to catch Trout and Walleye. He enjoyed reading Louis L’Amour books, listening to older country music, as well as listening to the family jam sessions that took place. He took joy in sitting on his porch and visiting with family and friends and aggravating his nieces and nephews. Walter’s best times were spent with his family, and he will be missed greatly by those that knew and loved him.

Walter is survived by: one daughter, Carol Sue (Massey) Withouse; three grandchildren, Josh Withouse and his wife Robbi, Jeri Nelson, and Brenda Wieberg; five great-grandchildren, Samantha Salters and Taylor Withouse, Kitley and Kaden Nelson, and Chase Buddemeyer; one great-great grandchild, Sutton; one brother, Donald Nie and his wife Jane; one niece Amy Jones and her husband Lucas; one nephew, Danny Nie and his wife Robin; three great nieces, Mea Jones, Aurora Pfeiffer, and Victoria Pfeiffer; and one great-nephew, Dalton Jones as well as many extended family members and friends.
