Wesley Martin Mathis passed away Sunday, January 21, 2024 at the Good Shepherd Adult Care Center, in Versailles, Mo. He had reached the age of 89. On March 16, 1956 he was united in marriage to Barbara Hughes. Barbara survives of Versailles.
“Wes” was born at Redbird, Mo, Gasconade County, to Martin and Marie Emelia Scheel. He was baptized as a child in the Waverly M.E. church and was a born-again Christian. Wes was a longtime member of the Army National Guard.
Above everything else, he loved his family and wife Barbara Jean Hughes. He provided so well for them as an underground coal miner, a vehicle mechanic, then as a supervisor for the General Motors car plant.
He and his wife owned and operated the Park Lane Motel in Higginsville until Wes’s retirement. Wes and Barb retired to his boyhood farm in Redbird where they raised cattle and resided there for 23 years. They moved into the town of Bland, Mo. In Bland he had a wood-working shop where he made, by hand, many beautiful articles which included over 500 hand-made canes and walking sticks for family and friends. Wes was known for his generosity and was always helping and giving to those who needed him. He was kind and loving to all and will be greatly missed.
In addition to his wife he is survived by their children, Brenda Schneider, and Wesley Mathis, Jr.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Dana Nolte
